Wicker Reminds Seniors, Veterans to Apply for Economic Stimulus Checks

June 5, 2008

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today reminded all eligible seniors and disabled veterans that despite the passing of the April 15 tax deadline, they still have until October 15 to file for an economic stimulus rebate check.

“I worked hard to ensure that seniors and disabled veterans were included in the economic stimulus legislation, and I want to be sure they know they still have time to apply for their rebate check,” Sen. Wicker said.

In an effort to jumpstart the economy, Congress passed economic stimulus legislation earlier this year that made millions of taxpayers eligible for rebates of $600 for individuals and $1,200 for married couples.  Prior to Senate approval of the legislation, an amendment cosponsored by Sen. Wicker was approved that also made seniors and disabled veterans eligible for a rebate check.

Seniors and disabled veterans with $3,000 or more in income in 2007 are eligible for rebates of $300 for individuals or $600 for married couples.  Qualifying income includes Social Security benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance, veterans’ disability benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits, and wages from work.

As a result of this legislation, many seniors and disabled veterans who don’t normally file tax returns are eligible for this one-time rebate.  In order for these individuals to receive their rebate, Wicker stressed that they file a 1040A tax form before October 15, even if they do not owe taxes.

“These economic stimulus checks were meant to get extra money into the hands of those who need the help the most,” Wicker said.  “I strongly encourage qualified seniors and disabled veterans to file a 1040A form by October 15 so they receive their rebate check.”
