JACKSON, Miss. – After spending two days visiting areas in Mississippi damaged by Hurricane Gustav, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., has sent a letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urging the federal government to move quickly to provide assistance to counties in Mississippi affected by Hurricane Gustav. 

In writing FEMA Administrator David Paulison, Wicker said: “Over the last several days, I have toured the Gulf Coast and parts of Southwest Mississippi with local mayors, county supervisors, and other elected officials.  I have met with many Mississippians and witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by this hurricane.”

Wicker noted the debris removal assistance that was approved for Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson Counties earlier this week, but said that more needs to be done.

“I am appreciative of the response that the Federal Emergency Management Agency made prior to landfall and immediately following the disaster.  However, over the next several days and in the coming months, more must be done to address the pressing needs and long-term concerns of Mississippians,” Wicker wrote.
