Wicker Statement on Addressing Nation's Financial Markets

September 23, 2008

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today issued the following statement regarding ongoing discussions to pass legislation to stabilize our nation's financial markets:

“Like other taxpayers across the country, I am concerned and angered by the need for this proposal.  In principle, I have never believed it is the taxpayers’ responsibility to pay for the private sector’s mistakes.  At the same time, I am well aware of the severity of this problem and want to ensure that whatever action is taken is going to protect the homes, life savings, and jobs of people across the country.  While I understand the call for quick action, I also believe we have a duty to be thoughtful and act responsibly.  As we consider the proposal, I plan to continue listening to the people of Mississippi as well as consulting with my colleagues and with officials from the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve to ensure any action taken is the best course to ensure economic security.”
