Wicker Joins Call for ACORN Investigation
Group of 20 Senators Asks Government Accountability Office to Investigate Troubled Community Organizing Group
September 24, 2009
WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., has joined a group of his colleagues in asking the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate the Association of Community Organizations, otherwise known as ACORN.
In a letter to Gene L. Dodaro, acting comptroller general at GAO, the senators wrote: “Current voter fraud investigations in several states, prior fraud convictions, and new videos showing apparent illegal activity by ACORN employees suggest that at the very least the organization warrants a top to bottom investigation on behalf of the taxpayer. Taxpayers deserve nothing less than a thorough and transparent accounting of ACORN’s activities.”
Wicker, who has called for all federal funding of ACORN to be cut off, noted their letter comes on the heels of yesterday’s decision by the IRS to end its partnership with the group.
“I applaud the IRS for ending its partnership with this troubled organization,” Wicker said. “ACORN has continued to prove it is incapable of using taxpayer dollars in a manner that is consistent with the law. Not one more dime of taxpayer money should be given to this group.”
