Wicker Supports TVA Board Nominee
March 21, 2011
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today congratulated Richard Howorth on his nomination to the TVA Board of Directors. President Obama made the nomination earlier in the day.
“I am delighted that the President has finally selected a Mississippian to serve on the TVA Board,” said Wicker. “Richard should have no trouble getting confirmed by the Senate. He will represent the rate payers and the interests of Mississippi in a capable way.”
In 1934, Tupelo became the first city to receive electrical service from TVA and still prides itself as the “First TVA City.” For more than 70 years, TVA has played an important role in promoting infrastructure and economic development in North Mississippi and the surrounding Tennessee Valley area. Over the years, the ties between Mississippi and TVA have been realized through representation on the TVA Board of Directors. The 2005 change in TVA's governing structure, moving from a three-member board to a nine-member board created the opportunity for wider representation.
