Wicker Statement on One Year Anniversary of Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

April 19, 2011

TUPELO, MS – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today made the following statement ahead of the one year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion, which occurred on April 20, 2010:

“One year ago tomorrow, the entire Gulf Coast endured an unprecedented environmental catastrophe, but residents living on the coast are resilient and are persevering just as they did following Hurricane Katrina.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those eleven who lost their lives and those who suffered injuries from the explosion.

“The recovery from the subsequent oil spill is ongoing.  In Mississippi, the economic impacts of the Deepwater Horizon tragedy reached all sectors of the economy, including tourism, seafood, and energy production.  I continue to work with other Gulf Coast lawmakers to make sure local communities on the Mississippi coast receive the funds they need to restore all that was lost.”

Earlier today, Wicker appeared on 104.9FM’s Gulf Coast Mornings to discuss the oil spill’s one year anniversary, and that interview can be heard here.
