Wicker Works to Avoid Shutdown and Cut Federal Spending
April 7, 2011
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today urged his colleagues to keep the federal government funded while making significant cuts to spending.
“The federal government is borrowing 40 cents for every dollar we spend, which remains an irresponsible burden on our children and grandchildren,” said Wicker. “Tough choices are necessary to put our nation on a sustainable path. I will continue working to keep the federal government funded while reducing spending. I have voted for multiple proposals that would keep the government running, but Senate Democrats continue to block these efforts while failing to offer any alternative.”
“House leaders proposed a funding agreement that would keep the government running, fund our troops through the end of the year, maintain a policy on D.C. abortions that even President Clinton approved, and cut $6 billion in federal spending. However, Senator Reid and President Obama refuse to consider this.”
Last year, the Democrat-controlled Congress failed to pass any appropriations bills to fund the federal government, enacting short-term measures through March 4, 2011, instead. The House and Senate then agreed to two additional short-term spending bills. The last of these deals expires at midnight on April 8.
Wicker recently wrote about the need to cut spending in this column.
