WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today was named Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce’s Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security Subcommittee.
“Safe, reliable access to our nation’s roads and railways creates important economic opportunities for all Americans,” said Wicker. “The ability to move goods efficiently provides a competitive advantage for small and large businesses, helping them succeed in the global marketplace. Regulations governing transportation need to make sense and promote growth.”
The Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security has jurisdiction over matters relating to interstate transportation policy issues. The Subcommittee focuses on safety, security, and infrastructure development related to both freight and passenger transportation.
In addition to the Committee’s broad oversight of the Department of Transportation, the Subcommittee has oversight over the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration, the Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, the Research and Innovative Technology Administration, the Maritime Administration and the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. The Subcommittee jurisdiction also includes the transportation security programs and policies of the Department of Homeland Security and independent transportation regulatory boards, including the Federal Maritime Commission and the Surface Transportation Board.
