Wicker Applauds AmeriCorps and FEMA Partnership to Train Volunteers in Vicksburg
March 14, 2012
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) on Tuesday praised an agreement between AmeriCorps and FEMA to train 1,600 AmeriCorps volunteers annually to assist with disaster relief. The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps Southern Regional Campus in Vicksburg will serve as one of the training centers.
“Last year’s flooding was an important reminder of nature’s destructive power,” said Wicker. “Many Mississippi communities were especially hard hit. AmeriCorps volunteers served residents of Vicksburg and surrounding areas well before and after the flooding, and this partnership will train even more to be ready to respond to an emergency. We can never have enough trained and prepared volunteers to assist after a disaster.”
