Wicker Statement on DOMA Ruling

June 26, 2013

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision, by a vote of 5-4, to overturn the “Defense of Marriage Act”:

“I agree with the vast majority of Americans who believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman. The ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ was approved with overwhelming bipartisan support – by votes of 342 to 67 in the House of Representatives and 84 to 14 in the Senate and signed into law by President Bill Clinton. I believe passage of DOMA protected the sanctity of marriage, and I regret that the Court has overturned the act.”
