Wicker Supports Bill to Review Iran Agreement
Miss. Senator Says Congress, American People Deserve Chance to Weigh In
May 7, 2015
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today supported legislation to provide Congress with the opportunity to approve any final deal reached by the Obama Administration and Iran. The measure passed the Senate by a vote of 98-1.
“I continue to have concerns about the negotiations between the Administration and the world’s foremost state-sponsor of terrorism,” Wicker said. “Ultimately, preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon should be our top priority. To achieve that goal, any agreement should be enforceable, verifiable, and transparent, holding Iran accountable to its obligations. This bipartisan legislation, although not perfect, would provide the American people, through their elected representatives in Congress, a chance to review and weigh in on a final deal with Iran.”
The “Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015” would require President Obama to submit any final nuclear deal with Iran to Congress before being able to waive or suspend congressional sanctions. It also holds Iran accountable by requiring the President to certify to Congress every 90 days that Iran is complying with the agreement. If Iran violates the terms of the deal, the legislation provides an expedited process for Congress to restore its sanctions immediately.
