Wicker Praises Confirmation of Chao as Transportation Secretary

January 31, 2017

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., a senior member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, today issued a statement following Senate approval of Elaine Chao, President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Transportation:

“Secretary Chao has a proven record of leadership, and I am confident she will use her vast experience to help rebuild our nation’s infrastructure,” Wicker said. “Her commitment to public service and dedication to implementing the President’s plan promise to usher in an era of renewed efforts for improving America’s transportation network.”

Wicker expressed support for Secretary Chao following their meeting last month. During her nomination hearing, he questioned her about the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Contract Tower Program, the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the “Jones Act,” which supports the U.S. maritime industry.

In 2001, Secretary Chao served as Secretary of Labor under the George W. Bush Administration. She was the only member of his original Cabinet to serve throughout the entire eight years of his presidency. Additionally, Secretary Chao served as the Deputy Secretary of Transportation from 1989 to 1991 under the George H. W. Bush Administration.
