Wicker Asks VA Secretary for Plan to Improve Performance at Jackson, Biloxi Medical Centers

November 8, 2017

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today sent a letter to Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin asking the agency for a plan to improve the VA medical centers in Jackson and Biloxi after a recent report gave the two facilities low performance marks. The Veterans Administration’s (VA) 2017 Hospital Star Rating gave the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson two stars out of five.  The Gulf Coast VA Medical Center in Biloxi received one star.

“I am concerned about the performance of Mississippi’s two major medical centers,” Wicker wrote. “These results are especially disappointing since 64 percent of VA facilities showed improvement over last year.”

“Mississippi veterans…deserve better than two-star and one-star medical centers. VA has a responsibility to help each medical center identify and implement performance improvement measures. Please provide me with VA’s plan to help improve performance at Jackson and Biloxi.”

Wicker concluded the letter by inviting Secretary Shulkin to join him in visiting with veterans during a site visit to Mississippi in the near future.
