Wicker Votes to Confirm DeVos for Education Secretary
February 7, 2017
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today issued this statement following Senate approval of Betsy DeVos, President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Education:
“As the product of our state’s public schools and the father of three children who graduated from Tupelo’s public school system, I understand the important role education plays in our children’s futures and in our state’s economic development. I am confident Betsy DeVos will work to implement the laws that Congress passes and place decision-making back where it belongs – in the hands of family, local leaders, and states.”
During her confirmation hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions Committee, Ms. DeVos testified that she “absolutely” supports public education. Ms. DeVos is also committed to enforcing the “Individuals with Disabilities Education Act” and stated that the law is a “wonderful example of what happens when parents are regarded as full partners in their child's educational decision-making.”
