Wicker Votes for ‘First Step Act’
Miss. Senator Supports President Trump’s Efforts to Reform Criminal Justice System
December 18, 2018
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today voted for S. 756, the “First Step Act.” The legislation will address a number of challenges in the criminal justice system, while maintaining the safety of the American people.
“I believe in a strong criminal justice system that holds offenders accountable and keeps Americans safe,” Wicker said. “With unacceptably high rates of released prisoners returning to jail, it is clear we can do better to help these individuals change their lives before they reenter our communities. The ‘First Step Act’ will better prepare inmates to return to society, which will reduce crime and recidivism rates. This legislation is proof we can be tough on crime and more compassionate to those who deserve a second chance.”
The ‘First Step Act’ is endorsed by President Donald J. Trump and a wide range of organizations representing law enforcement, the faith community, and business associations.
Last month, Wicker participated in a roundtable discussion in Gulfport on the need for criminal justice reform with President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, U.S. Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Governor Phil Bryant, and other Mississippi leaders.
