Wicker: Democrats’ Proposal to Pack Supreme Court Would Destroy Trust in American Justice System

April 15, 2021

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today released the following statement opposing legislation introduced by Democrats to add four justices to the Supreme Court.

“Democrats’ latest attempts to pack the Supreme Court should concern every American. For more than 150 years, there have been nine seats on the Supreme Court, providing stability and trust in the rule of law. Congressional Democrats’ newest proposal to add four seats and President Biden’s recently announced commission to consider expanding the court are poorly disguised attempts to shift the ideological balance of the court permanently in their favor. This would destroy the American people's trust in our court system and do irreparable harm to our republic. Democrats are playing with fire.”

Wicker has been a staunch defender of the composition of the U.S. Supreme Court, writing in October 2020 and September 2019 about the dangers of partisan manipulation of the Court’s size. Wicker also cosponsored two pieces of legislation that would amend the U.S. Constitution to codify the current nine member court and require a supermajority (2/3) vote before any legislative effort to modify the size of the court could be considered by the Senate.
