Senator Wicker Statement on Reforms to National Security Program
April 20, 2024
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., released the following statement after voting yes on provisions to reform the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA):
“FISA is about gathering foreign intelligence on adversaries who wish us harm. This legislation outlines reforms to the existing law to make us more certain our government is not spying on Americans,” Senator Wicker said. “I have made the case for years that these sorts of national security programs save American lives. They keep air travel safe and quickly uncover terrorist threats.”
Senator Wicker also raised examples where these key national security programs have saved American lives.
- In late October 2023, FBI Section 702 collection identified a threat from foreign terrorists against multiple U.S. military installations overseas inspired by the Israel-Gaza conflict.
- The bill includes a provision that enhances intelligence collection against international drug traffickers that manufacture and smuggle deadly fentanyl into the United States.
- FISA Section 702 directly supported the February 2022 U.S. military operation that resulted in the successful lethal operation against Hajji ‘Abdallah, the leader of ISIS.
