MOUND BAYOU – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., joined state and local officials at a groundbreaking in Mound Bayou for a project that will provide high-speed internet to hundreds of people and multiple businesses and agricultural facilities in Bolivar County. The project is funded by a $3,520,100 United States Department of Agriculture ReConnect Grant that will install 30 miles of fiber and ultimately connect 300 locations.
Senator Wicker helped negotiate and pass the law to make this grant possible. In total, that law has brought in over a billion dollars to increase broadband access in rural parts of Mississippi.
Senator Wicker released the following statement:
“Just like those without electricity in the early 20th century, people without broadband access have been left behind,” Senator Wicker said. “This is a life-changing grant for the people of Bolivar County. This project will help local businesses reach customers better and make it easier for residents to pay their bills, attend telehealth appointments, and access educational programs. I will continue to secure funding that helps better connect rural Mississippi.”
